Packaged in a bulky glass bottle, the Castello di Monsanto 2018 Sangioveto Grosso Fabrizio Bianchi is all Sangiovese (although the synonym Sangioveto is used on the front label) from a 2.2-hectare plot named Vigna Scanni planted to vines in 1968. The site has schistose galestro soils that, in my opinion, render some of the most interesting and complex wines. This expression offers dark fruit with scorched earth, pencil shaving and hints of delicate rosemary or lavender. There is a lot of brightness in this wine.

The 2018 Sangioveto Grosso Fabrizio Bianchi is a bold, punchy wine. Dark cherry, leather, incense, sage and dried herbs give this boisterous Sangioveto plenty of character. The 2018 is a bit unruly and rough around the edges, but that only adds to its considerable appeal.
