Field blends built around Chenin Blanc are something of a Swartland calling card, and this white from A.A. Badenhorst leans into that tradition with a genuinely broad cast: Chenin makes up a little under half, joined by Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Palomino, Viognier, Roussanne, Muscat d'Alexandrie and Verdelho. The 2022 was fermented in large old wooden foudres and then rested in concrete for the better part of two years, an approach meant to preserve freshness rather than layer on oak. This is Western Cape white wine that rewards patience in the glass.
It opens quietly and asks to be coaxed, with yellow rose and white flowers, ripe peach, a lick of melted candle wax and a savory note of sweet sage. There is a saline, crushed-rock edge that keeps everything grounded, and the small proportion of Muscat lends a faint exotic lift that grows more insistent as the wine sits. The palate carries a medium-plus weight against a crisp, energetic line of acidity, poised and balanced throughout, finishing pithy and dry with a twist of orange rind.

The A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2022 Swartland Kalmoesfontein White Blend is 45% Chenin Blanc, 11% Clairette Blanche, 10% Grenache Blanc, 8% Palomino, 8% Viognier, 8% Roussanne, 5% Muscat d'Alexandrie and 5% Verdelho. I love the balance of the medium-plus mouthfeel and that hint of something exotic that picks up intensity with time. The wine starts off on a delicate note with yellow rose, peach, sweet sage and crushed rock salt. Those aromas gain intensity while the wine remains fresh and balanced all the while. This is a release of 10,000 bottles. (Wine Advocate, June 2025)
The 2022 White Blend Kalmoesfontein, fermented in foudres and aged in concrete for 20 months, has a tightly wound bouquet that demands coaxing: melted candle wax, white flowers and a very slight Muscat note from the 1-2% of that variety in the blend. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, palpable energy and poise, closing with a refined, pithy, orange-rind-tinged finish. Excellent. (Vinous)
