High in Mendoza's Gualtallary, at nearly 5,000 feet where cool air and rocky ground slow everything down, Bodegas Catena Zapata draws this single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Adrianna Vineyard. The 2022 White Stones is a still white raised in used French oak for somewhere between twelve and sixteen months, just enough contact to lend a faint spice without overwriting the fruit. Light on its feet and built around tension rather than weight.
The defining note is stone: wet rock, flint, crushed mineral, with citrus pith and lemon rind threading through. It is taut and incisive, driven by bright acidity and a thread of salinity that carries the finish long. The texture is grippy and chiseled, more reserved and angular than overtly fruity, and it keeps unfolding in the glass, adding dimension with air. Drinking beautifully now, with the structure to hold.

At almost 5,000-feet elevation in the cool of the region, growing deep in rocky soils, the light-bodied 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones features compellingly grippy texture that excites the palate. Like its sister, White Bones, it sees 12-16 months in used French oak barrel, coaxing a light touch of spice from the wood. Herbal, earthy, and textural above all, it sings in buzzy acidity and yet retains a refined mouthfeel of length and complex angles, digging deep into ethereal flavors of lemon rind and wet stone. Drink now through 2042. This is incredibly delicious. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2022 Adrianna Vineyard Chardonnay White Stones is more introverted, understated and explicitly chiseled than its more textural and exotic White Bones companion. On the nose, it opens with transparent yet focused aromas of citrus pith and crushed stones, introducing a sleek, vibrant and laser-focused palate. The finish is similarly angular and incisive, continuously generating additional depth and dimension with time in the glass. While I slightly preferred the White Bones bottling due to its extra gear of complexity and textural depth, this is another clear-cut yardstick by which to measure the progress of Argentine white-wine production. (Wine Advocate, May 2025)
This is always minerally and incisive and very different from White Bones. This is more classic chardonnay, with lots of freshly squeezed lemons, wet stone, flint and seashells. Brisk acidity on a medium- to full-bodied palate. Tense and intense, but this is acid-driven with a fine touch of salinity that lingers at the end. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
