Lagrein is a dark-skinned grape native to the Alto Adige, capable of deep color and firm structure, and here it takes the Riserva route under Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian). This is the 2018 Tor di Lupo, an Alto Adige DOC bottling built for weight and length rather than easy charm.
Pour it and the color is nearly opaque, an inky dark that sets the tone. The fruit stays a touch reserved in this vintage, more a general swirl of darkness than a bright display, though blackberry preserves and dark plum come through, edged with mild earth and a light dusting of spice. What really carries the wine is the palate: thick, layered, and generous in texture, with a mouthfeel that gives it presence and depth.

The Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo is inky dark and impenetrable in appearance. The wine shows thickness and weight, although the fruit aromas are downplayed in this vintage. You get blackberry preserves and dark plum delivered in a less specific swirl of darkness, with some mild earth and spice sprinkled throughout. The wine's strongest suit is its mouthfeel, which shows deep layering and nice texture. Some 15,000 bottles were made. (Wine Advocate, September 2021)
