Lagrein is a dark-fruited red native to the far north of Italy, and this Riserva comes from Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) in the Alto Adige, bottled under the region's DOC. The 2020 is a Riserva, meaning extended aging before release, and it leans into the deep color and firm structure the grape is known for. Roughly 15,000 bottles were made.
Concentration is the headline here, inky in the glass and thick with jammy blackberry, a suggestion of blackberry pie right down to the pastry. Alongside the fruit there are darker, softer notes, chocolate and a lactic tang, with rhubarb and raspberry filling in the edges. The tannins arrive with force and hold their grip on the palate, a reminder that a warm growing season pushed this grape close to its limit.

The Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) 2020 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo is thickly concentrated with jammy aromas of the proverbial blackberry pie. There is a lactic note of chocolate yogurt, rhubarb and raspberry pastry. The tannins are abrupt, holding the palate at gunpoint, and the wine is so inky you could almost drizzle it onto ice cream. The hot 2020 vintage pushes this grape to its limits. Production is 15,000 bottles. (Wine Advocate, April 2024)
