Description
Lagrein is one of Alto Adige's native red grapes, dark-fruited and firmly structured, and this Riserva bottling from Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) shows what the variety does when given serious cellar time. The 2022 was fermented in steel tanks with gentle pump-overs, then went through malolactic fermentation and aging in barrique. It comes from the Sudtirol, the German-speaking corner of northern Italy where mountain vineyards produce reds of unusual depth.
The color is nearly opaque, and the aromatics lean savory rather than sweet: spice, tobacco, and dried blackberry. There is a warm, generous richness through the palate, the kind that comes from a hot growing season, and the finish turns peppery with a lift of exotic spice.
