Mencía is the red grape that gives Galicia its dark, savory character, and this bottling from Avancia draws on the region's warmest corner, where the vines grow in slate soils that leave their mark on the wine. The 2024 is built mostly around Mencía with a small share of field-blended companions, aged seven months on its lees in used Bordeaux and Burgundy barrels with regular stirring, then recently bottled.
Blackberry and dark cherry lead on the nose, with a ripe red-fruit note underneath and a toasty edge from the neutral oak that sits forward for now. The palate is broad and plush, plummy and velvety through a generous midpalate, with medium structure and fine, dusty tannins. There's a mineral thread running through it that speaks to the slate. Approachable now, with room to hold over the next several years.
The 2024 Mencía Cuvée De O, with a small percentage of other field-blended varieties, was aged for seven months on lees in used Bordeaux and Burgundy barrels with bâtonnage. It has blackberry and dark cherry aromas on the nose, then a red fruit note in a ripe style. The oak is prominent for now. Broad, with medium structure and fine tannins, this offers a plush midpalate. The 2024 was recently bottled. (Vinous)
The 2024 Cuvee De O Mencia comes from the warmest place in Galicia and is sourced from several vineyards in the appellation planted in slate soils, reflected in the wine’s flavors and minerality. A sumptuous mouthfeel is wrapped in plummy, dusty, velvety soft fruit and tannins, light to medium-bodied with a light toasty note from the neutral oak. Drink now and over the next 7-9 years.
