Mencía is the red grape that gives northwest Spain its cool-climate signature, and Avancia works it here in Galicia from a single vineyard called Carballedo, on the southern bank of the Sil River facing north. The 2022 draws on vines planted in 1940, with only a tiny production, and the fruit spends eight months in French oak. The result is a wine of real seriousness, medium to full in body and built to reward attention.
Expect a layered nose that moves from redcurrant and black cherry into chocolate, graphite, and savory herbs, with a reductive edge that reads as oregano, flint, and something almost mineral and bloody underneath. Floral and leafy notes lift the whole thing. In the mouth it's juicy and textured, with fine tannins and integrated acidity holding the frame, and a touch of warmth from the alcohol that adds to its mature, complete character.
A new wine from Avancia, the 2022 Nobleza Carballedo Mencia comes from vines planted in 1940, and only two barrels were produced. It's slightly deeper and richer, with beautiful redcurrant, black cherry, chocolate, graphite, and savory herb-driven aromatics. With medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, layered mouthfeel, and both integrated acidity and tannins, it's another sensational wine from this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2024)
