Mencía is the red grape that gives northwest Spain its cool-climate character, and this old-vine bottling from Avancia comes off north-facing vines at Aeiroá, in Galicia's Sil River Valley. It is 100% Mencía from the 2022 vintage, aged eight months in French oak, a dry growing season that pushed the fruit toward firmer tannins and greater concentration than the year before.
Expect dark fruit at the center, ripe black cherry and mulberry with a bright streak of pomegranate, framed by peppery herb, leather, and a mineral, graphite edge. The oak sits quietly in support. This is a medium-bodied red with fine, well-knit tannins and a vibrant, energetic freshness that keeps the palate focused and juicy.
The 2022 Mencía Nobleza hails from Aeiroá in the Sil River Valley, where vines face north. Aged for eight months in French oak, this wine presents aromas of dark fruit, blood and intense pomegranate, alongside subtle oak influence. The dry vintage eliminated the oregano note that appeared in 2021, resulting in firmer tannins, greater concentration and a vibrant, energetic palate with juicy and focused flavors. (Vinous)
The 2022 Nobleza Mencia is gorgeous. Based on 100% Mencía, it has beautiful ripe black cherry and darker mulberry-like fruit as well as some peppery herb, leather, and graphite aromatics. These carry to a medium-bodied red that's beautifully balanced, has fine tannins, and a wonderful sense of freshness. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2024)
