Description

Rosé Champagne built on a Chardonnay backbone, this bottling from Champagne Ayala leans on the 2020 harvest, with Chardonnay making up just over half the blend, Pinot Noir close behind, a small portion of Meunier, and a touch of still red wine worked in to lend color while keeping the whole thing fresh. It is a non-vintage cuvée made in the traditional method, with secondary fermentation in the bottle, and the choices here all point toward lift rather than weight.

The pour is a bright, pretty pink, and the glass opens up expressively with wild strawberry, crushed rose petals, grapefruit, and a streak of wet stone. It sits in the medium-bodied range, rounded and delicate on the palate but crunchy and fresh in feel, never heavy. The finish comes through clean and precise, carrying white pepper, a flash of orange zest, and a faintly pithy grip that keeps everything in balance. Approachable now and built to hold for years.

The NV Champagne Rose Majeur is based around the 2020 harvest and is made of 52% Chardonnay, 38% Pinot Noir, and the rest Meunier and about 5% still red wine. (The intention is to preserve the freshness of the wine.) It pours a bright pink hue and is very pretty and expressive in the glass on opening, with notes of wild strawberries, crushed roses, wet stone, and grapefruit. Medium-bodied and approachable, it retains lovely freshness and has a delicate, rounded feel but is fresh and crunchy in its style. Its finish is clean and pure, a fresh note of white pepper and a hint of orange zest. It has a delicate pithy feel is quite nicely balanced at this stage. Drink over the coming 10-12 years.
