Eden Valley sits at the cooler, higher edge of South Australia's Shiraz country, and this bottling from Bar-Eden makes the most of that elevation. The 2016 comes from a single puncheon (just 50 cases), drawn from the best parcels of the vineyard. Roughly 90 percent of the fruit was hand-destemmed, with the remainder left as whole bunches, a choice that lends a savory lift to the finished wine.
Dense and complex without turning heavy, it fills the palate with a creamy, full-bodied texture before closing on a long, vibrant finish. Expect a shifting mix of aromas: resinous herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender) over ripe blueberry and boysenberry, with darker notes of mocha, black olive, and licorice threading through. It drinks smooth and supple, but there is real tannin and structure underneath, the kind of frame that will carry it well for a couple of decades.

There is a single puncheon (50 cases) of the 2016 Love Over Gold Shiraz, selected from the best parcels of the vineyard and 90% hand-destemmed, with the balance included as whole bunches. Like previous vintages, it shows remarkable density and complexity, a creamy, full-bodied feel on the palate and a long, vibrant finish. No doubt every lucky person who tastes it will find their own descriptors for the myriad aromas and flavors, but to me, it delivers a potpourri of resinous-herbal nuances (thyme, rosemary, lavender), blueberry and boysenberry fruit and hints of mocha, black olive and licorice.
