Shiraz from the Eden Valley tends toward a cooler, more perfumed expression than its warmer South Australian neighbors, and this 2018 from Barr-Eden leans into that savory side. Fermented and raised in concrete rather than oak, it keeps the fruit clean and the texture honest, medium to full in body without tipping into weight or excess.
Plummy dark fruit sits at the center, ringed by black olive, espresso and a whiff of roasted meat, with wild herbs, paprika and ground clove adding spice and lift. There is real concentration here, but the palate stays silky and refreshing, tannins fine and powdery, the finish long and mouthwatering with a savory, herb-flecked close. Nutmeg and thyme linger. It drinks beautifully now and should hold its shape for years.

Aged in a concrete tank, the 2018 Avenue to Gold Shiraz features some strong notes of black olives, espresso and roasted meat set against a backdrop of plummy fruit and garnished with hints of wild herbs. From a top-flight vintage, it's medium to full-bodied and amply concentrated, but it doesn't come across as heavy or overdone, instead being silky and refreshing on the palate and finishing long, mouthwatering and savory. I suspect it will drink well for at least a decade. (Wine Advocate, August 2021)
Aromas of fresh red fruits, paprika and ground clove. Full-bodied with powdery tannins. Savory and spiced on the palate with a solid core of red fruits and berries. Nutmeg and thyme come through. Drink now. (James Suckling)
