Grosses Gewächs is Germany's designation for dry wines from its finest single vineyards, and this bottling comes from the Hohenmorgen site in the Pfalz. Bassermann-Jordan farms Riesling here in a warmer, sunnier corner of German wine country, and the 2020 is fermented fully dry (trocken), a style that lets the fruit and the vineyard's structure speak without any softening sweetness.
There is a peachy juiciness to it, ripe but not heavy, and the wine moves across the palate with a light, unhurried step. Underneath that easy motion is real depth, and the finish lands generous and polished at once. Good now, with the frame to reward some patience.
I like the peachy juiciness here, and the light-footed way this dry riesling moves over the palate. Good depth and a finish thatâs both generous and polished. Drink or hold. (James Suckling, August 2021)
