Description

Syrah grown on the steep terraces of Côte-Rôtie in the northern Rhône tends toward a perfumed, structured expression of the grape, and this 2020 bottling from Bott sits squarely in that tradition. It is a wine built for both aromatics and grip, the kind of northern Rhône red that rewards attention.

The glass glistens a bright ruby and opens on cherry and black raspberry lifted by spice and a fine mineral thread, with pipe tobacco, violet, and a smoky, bacon-like note curling underneath. The texture is densely packed and gently chewy, carrying sweet, spice-tinged red and dark berry fruit and a floral pastille quality, all kept lively by juicy acidity. Tannins are polished rather than gripping, and the finish runs long and penetrating, that mineral edge returning alongside a resonant florality. There is real intensity here, ripe and generous but with a nervy tension that keeps it honest.

Vinous

Glistening ruby. Spice- and mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of pipe tobacco, violet, smoky bacon and exotic spices. Densely packed and subtly chewy in texture, offering appealingly sweet, spice-tinged red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. The mineral note returns on a very long, penetrating finish that features polished tannins and resonating florality. x000D. (Vinous, December 2022)

I loved the 2020 Côte Rôtie, another terrific effort here. Giving up lots of ripe black and blue fruits as well as spring flowers and bouquet garni-like notes, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, has ripe, sweet tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck, December 2022)

Decanter

Pear and sweet spices, rounded and generous on the palate, this has tension and a pithy, citrusy finish. Has intensity and bite; an edgy, nervy style. (Decanter, October 2021)
