Description

The northern Rhône appellation of Côte-Rôtie is Syrah country, grown on steep slopes above the river where the grape takes on a distinctly perfumed, savory character. This is Bott's 2020, a single-varietal expression (or nearly so, as a small measure of Viognier is traditional here) that leans into the aromatic side of the style rather than sheer power.

Ruby in the glass, with cherry and black raspberry lifted by spice and a mineral thread, then edged with pipe tobacco, violet, smoky bacon, and exotic spice. The palate is densely packed and gently chewy, carrying sweet, spice-inflected red and dark berry along with a floral-pastille note, all held in line by juicy acidity. Tannins are polished and ripe, and the finish runs long and penetrating, the florality and mineral cut resonating well past the last sip.

Vinous

Glistening ruby. Spice- and mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of pipe tobacco, violet, smoky bacon and exotic spices. Densely packed and subtly chewy in texture, offering appealingly sweet, spice-tinged red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. The mineral note returns on a very long, penetrating finish that features polished tannins and resonating florality. x000D. (Vinous, December 2022)

I loved the 2020 Côte Rôtie, another terrific effort here. Giving up lots of ripe black and blue fruits as well as spring flowers and bouquet garni-like notes, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, has ripe, sweet tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck, December 2022)

Pear and sweet spices, rounded and generous on the palate, this has tension and a pithy, citrusy finish. Has intensity and bite; an edgy, nervy style. (Decanter, October 2021)
