Description

High-altitude old-vine Garnacha is the heart of this bottling, an Aragon red drawn from vines planted between 1900 and 1918 in the Sierra de Santa Cruz. Working with tiny yields, roughly a ton per acre, the fruit comes in dense and concentrated, and it's raised for twenty months in large French oak barrels (500- and 600-liter, half of them new), where the wine also completes malolactic fermentation. This is a full-bodied, serious expression of Garnacha de Aragon, ripe at 15% alcohol but built around firm structure.

Expect a savory, meaty character here, with blackberry and darker fruit shaded by thyme, orange peel and a balsamic edge, and threaded with graphite and pencil lead. The oak reads as sweet spice, toast and smoke rather than sweetness. What keeps it lively is the freshness: acidity carries the juicy palate and holds its energy against powerfully firm, slightly dusty tannins and a dry, mineral-soaked finish. A wine that rewards patience, and one that will show best with a few years in the cellar.

Vinous

The 2021 Brega Old Vine Garnacha opens with balsamic-tinged gentian and thyme, orange peel and blackberry. Freshness drives the juicy palate and maintains its energy amidst fine tannins and a slightly reactive texture. (Vinous, June 2026)

The estate’s top cuvée, the 2021 Brega is 100% Garnacha de Aragon from two vineyards at high altitude in the Sierra de Santa Cruz, planted between 1900 and 1918. Yielding only one ton per acre, it’s densely concentrated and a touch reductive, with powerfully firm tannins and ample body weight. The savory, meaty profile of soy and saltiness is dripping in minerality, all spice and smoky oak. Drink 2028-2031. (Jeb Dunnuck, January 2026)

Wine Advocate

The 2021 Brega shows a profile of darker fruit and some hints of graphite and lead pencil, with a full-bodied palate and abundant, slightly dusty tannins and a dry finish. It comes in at 15% alcohol but with good freshness, a pH of 3.2 and 6.5 grams of acidity. This is more concentrated, with a little more extraction and influence from the élevage of 20 months in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels, 50% of them new, where the wine also underwent malolactic fermentation, with notes of sweet spices, toast and smoke. 19,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2025. (Wine Advocate, December 2025)
