Burn Cottage's Moonlight Race is a 2023 Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand, built from fruit across the producer's vineyard holdings in the region. It arrives under screw cap at 13.5% alcohol.
The wine opens with graphite minerality and brambly layers of dark cherry, red and black fruits, threaded through with floral and herbal notes that give it real complexity. On the palate, there's an appealing juiciness and creamy suppleness, though the tannins are firm and powdery at first, unfolding gradually toward a savoury finish. A spicy brightness runs through the profile, with hints of blood orange, dark chocolate, coffee, and star anise adding to the mix. The wine leans toward the lean rather than plush, but that restraint works in its favor, the tannins and acidity feel integrated and serious, creating something elegant and approachable at once.

Graphite, brambly red and black fruits, lots of dark cherry, an enticing floral/herb element too – Burn Cottage always builds so many layers into its wines. Nice juiciness on the palate, which is smooth, supple and creamy. Firmer powdery tannins take a while to unfurl, but the palate is very lovely when they do, with good build to the savoury finish. Nicely made, with good elegance. A blend of fruit from Burn Cottage’s Lowburn home vineyard and its Bannockburn Sauvage and Sappa vineyards.
The 2023 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is stalky, spicy and bright, with note of Campari/blood orange that mingle alongside dark chocolate, coffee, blood plum and star anise. If anything, this feels slightly lean rather than plush, but it works well within the scope of the wine. In the mouth, the tannins and acidity work together as one, making this wine feel integrated, serious, and fun, all at once. Recommended. It is very fine. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
