Nebbiolo grown high on the Novello slopes, at around 420 meters on a few southeast-facing rows, forms the backbone of this Barolo Riserva from Beppe Caviola. The winemaking takes an unusual turn: after time in small casks, the wine rests an additional year in ceramic amphorae before bottling, a step that softens edges without stripping away the grape's natural grip. As a Riserva from the 2019 vintage, it carries the extended ageing and the structure that designation implies.
The aromatics lean dark and floral, with lavender and rosemary blossom giving way to a lift of allspice. On the palate it turns deep and dense, cherry and strawberry threaded through with cool, steely minerality and a leafy edge of tobacco. The tannins are robust and chewy, well integrated but still tightly wound, adding real textural weight and signaling that patience will reward you here.
Beppe Caviola selects his Riserva from a few choice southeast-facing rows at 420m. After ageing in small casks, it spends an additional year in ceramic amphorae before bottling. The nose highlights a dark floral personality: lavender, rosemary blossom and allspice waft seductively from the glass. On the palate, deep, dense cherry and strawberry are underscored by cool, steely minerals and leafy tobacco. Robust, chewy tannins are well matched and provide further textural depth but ultimately demand more time. (Decanter, January 2025)
