Description

A five-variety Bordeaux blend built in the classic mold, this 2018 from Cain Vineyard leans on the structure you expect from Cabernet while folding in smaller measures of the supporting cast, including 4% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. It spends time in French oak, roughly 60% of it new and the rest neutral, a ratio that shapes without overwhelming. The result is a California red with the framework and patience of a wine meant for the table and the cellar alike.

Aromatically it opens wide, cassis and currant up front, then a whole savory register underneath: black pepper, smoked paprika, incense, and a scorched, loamy earthiness, with faint touches of dried violet and straw. The tannins are fine-grained and firm but never forbidding, held in line by bright acidity and a real sense of tension. The finish runs long and complex, dark fruit giving way to spice and a mineral edge that keeps you coming back to the glass.

Aged in 60% new and 40% neutral French oak. The entire blend also includes 4% Malebc and 4% Petit Verdot. Such a wonderfully built, expressive, and structured wine. Goregeously aromatic, with cassis and currant fruits, black pepper, smoked paprika, incense and scorched, loamy earth, a hint of dried violets and straw. Fine-grained tannins are firm, yet inviting, with god underlying acidity and tension, and plenty of dark fruits, savoury spices, and minerality to revel in on the complex and lengthy finish.
