Description
A Bordeaux-style blend grown atop Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, this is the 2021 Cain Five, the thirty-second edition of a wine that gathers all five of the traditional Bordeaux grapes into one bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon leads at 40%, filled out by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and a small measure of Petit Verdot, all drawn from the estate's Cain Vineyard on its thin clay and sandstone soils. It carries particular weight as the first vintage following the Glass Fire of 2020, made in a very small quantity from the grapes that came through.
There is a savory, earthy character here that regular drinkers of this wine will recognize, wrapped this time in real youthful energy. Crushed violets and fresh mountain herbs come first, sage and thyme with a lick of white pepper and loamy earth. On the palate it is vivid and fresh, the berry fruit shot through with a tarry note, held tight by crunchy acidity and muscular, deeply structured tannins. A wine built to reward patience.

The 2021 Cain Five is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot, sourced entirely from surviving grapes in the Cain Vineyard atop Spring Mountain. It’s not yet released and will be available in 2025. This wine has that beautifully savoury quality so reminiscent of Cain, with its distinct brettanomyces character, but with a youthful vibrancy, featuring crushed violets and very fresh tarweed (a plant growing all around the estate property), reminiscent of sage and thyme crushed together with white pepper and hints of loamy earth. It is incredibly fresh and vivid on the palate, with tar-laced berry fruit, crunchy acidity, and potent tannins that display intense muscularity. The vineyard site consists primarily of thin clay and sandstone soils with extreme exposures, made even more pronounced after the Glass Fire of 2020.
