A Bordeaux-style red grown in the Veneto might surprise anyone who thinks of the region mainly for Prosecco and Amarone, but Loredan Gasparini has long made a case for Cabernet and its blending partners in northern Italy. This is their Capo di Stato, a 2019 built on the structural logic of a classic left-bank blend, dark-fruited and firmly framed, and released in a vintage the label marks as an exceptional one.
The nose moves between ripe wild berries and restrained cassis, with sweet herbs, pressed flowers, and touches of leather, cocoa powder, and creme fraiche adding shading. On the palate it is full-bodied and dense, its tannins finely knit and velvety, with a firm, juicy acidity running the length of a long, racy finish. There is structure and balance in equal measure here, a faint rustic edge kept in line by that crisp acid spine. A wine with plenty of road ahead of it.

The current vintage release has fresh, engaging complexity with aromas of ripe wild berries, sweet herbs, and touches of creme fraiche and cocoa powder. Firm, juicy acidity and finely knit tannins combine on a long, racy palate, which has both structure and balance. A wine with a radiant future. The female version of the label denotes the exceptional vintage. (Decanter, January 2024)
A complex wine with leather, restrained cassis and pressed flowers on the nose. Full-bodied, it shows density and firm, velvety tannins. It’s slightly rustic yet underlined by long, crisp acidity. Slightly austere finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
