Nebbiolo is the grape here, grown in the Langhe hills of Piedmont and bottled under the Mirafiore label, an historic Italian name (once among the first to ship wine abroad) that today draws exclusively on estate-owned vineyards, primarily in the township of Serralunga d'Alba. This 2021 is Barolo in the classic sense, built on a variety known for firm tannin and perfume in equal measure.
The nose opens bright and intense, with wild red berries and a tangle of forest flora. On the palate it turns quieter and more nuanced, threaded with rosehip tea and a savory, salty minerality. The tannins are fine, even a touch delicate for a site that usually delivers real power, which gives the wine a discreet, harmonious feel rather than an imposing one. Balanced and gently detailed throughout.
One of four single-MGA Barolo, the Lazzarito is bright and intense to begin with, showing wild red berries and intricacies of forest flora. While the palate is less persistent, it is beguilingly nuanced by rosehip tea and salty minerals. The tannins are fine, even a bit delicate for this typically powerful site. Rather discreet overall but balanced and harmonious. Fontanafredda’s Mirafiore label revives an historic Italian brand that was among the first to export wine globally. Today, it focuses exclusively on estate-owned vineyards in the Langhe – primarily in the township of Serralunga d’Alba. (Decanter, January 2025)
