Description

Casanova di Neri's Tenuta Nuova is a Brunello di Montalcino from the 2019 vintage, made entirely from Sangiovese grown in Tuscany's most hallowed red wine zone. The wine spent 30 months in large wooden vessels (tonneaux), emerging with the depth and textural richness the house is known for, yet with a bright primary elegance that distinguishes it from the estate's more heavily aged reserve bottlings.

This is dark wine, noir-toned and aromatic. The bouquet turns up layer after layer: kirsch and dried black cherry, dark chocolate, crushed rosemary, lavender oil, clove, and a vein of toasted spice running through black fruit, licorice, and star anise. On the palate, the fruit concentrates into blood orange oils and blackberry compote, carried on velvety tannins that feel fine-grained and silken rather than rough. Warming spice and saline notes arrive mid-palate, and the finish stretches long and potent. This is a wine built for the cellar, though it will also show beautifully with a classic steak now.

In my mind, this is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style. With 30 months of aging in tonneaux, it shows enormous richness and texture, and the stellar fruit quality appears with more primary elegance compared to the more expensive Cerretalto that is released with an extra year of aging. That dynamic is especially pronounced in a comparison of the 2019 and 2018 vintages. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a dark vein of toasted spice, black fruit, ink, blackberry compote, licorice and star anise. Dark as night, it is exceptionally well crafted with a robust delivery of concentrated fruit and solid tannic structure. You can count on excellent cellar potential, or at a minimum, serve it with a classic steak. Production is exactly 69,696 bottles.

A jeweled ruby color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova takes things to the next level at this estate. Offering a deeply layered bouquet of kirsch, dark chocolate, crushed rosemary, and lavender oils, on the palate it’s rich with flavors of blood orange oils, velvety tannins, warming spice, and a long finish that soars above and beyond, with saline accents taking it to the next level. The bouquet is incredible and keeps going for ages. It spent 36 months in 500-liter used barrels. Drink 2026-2046. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is an understated beauty, perfumed and highly aromatic, with a gorgeous blend of dried black cherry, clove, hints of sage and spiced blood orange. It is cool-toned and classic in feel, with silken textures and vibrant acidity that enlivens the core of tart red berry fruits. A cascade of violet and lavender tones resonate over a coating of fine-grained tannins as it flexes its structural muscle, tapering off long and potent and demanding the taster's attention. This will pay dividends in the cellar.
