Description
Sangiovese grown in Chianti Classico takes on a firmer, more structured shape when bottled as Riserva, and this 2021 from Castello di Ama draws its fruit from a site sitting about a kilometer from one of the estate's better-known parcels, with much the same growing conditions. A relatively young addition to the range, the Montebuoni offers a broad, concentrated reading of the grape, more generous in fruit weight than lean in structure.
Expect dark fruit up front, blackberry and plum edging toward black cherry, framed by leather, tobacco, grilled herbs and a whiff of licorice and incense. The tannins are velvety, the body mid-weight and accessible, though there is a faint lean streak through the middle before the finish stretches out long and energetic. This is a serious bottle with real intensity, and a few years in the cellar will let it fill out.

First released in 2018, this wine draws its fruit from a site about one kilometer over from the celebrated Vigneto Bellavista with similar conditions. The Castello di Ama 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Montebuoni is a broad and rich expression of Sangiovese that offers concentrated blackberry, plum and velvety tannins.
