Description

A prestige cuvée bottled only in years that merit it, this is the 2014 vintage of William Deutz, the top wine from the house of Deutz in Champagne. Made by the traditional method, with the secondary fermentation that gives Champagne its fine bead, it comes from a vintage that few in the region had much faith in early on, and it makes a persuasive case for reconsidering that pessimism. This is Champagne built for substance rather than aperitif lightness.

Give it a little time in the glass and it unfolds in layers: kirsch and orchard fruit, Golden Delicious apple and pear, white flowers and orchard blossom, with savory turns toward toasted hazelnut, fleur de sel, oyster shell, and a whisper of candied ginger. There are more brooding notes too, buttered toast and biscuit, a hint of soy and tobacco, all held together by a lemony freshness that keeps the intensity in check. The mousse is creamy and luxurious, the bubbles rounded and silky, and the finish carries on at length. A wine of real presence that will reward those who let it open up.

Vinous

The 2014 William Deutz is quite the powerhouse. A Champagne of substance and presence, the 2014 has a lot to offer. Kirsch, white flowers, orchard fruit and hints of spice all resonate as this intense, layered Champagne opens with a bit of coaxing. It’s another terrific Champagne from a vintage that producers were quite negative on at the outset. (Vinous)

Wine Spectator

A lovely, mouthwatering Champagne, creamy and finely meshed, this is only slowly revealing layered flavors of Golden Delicious apple and orchard blossoms, chopped hazelnut and fleur de sel, candied ginger and oyster shell as they expand on the luxurious mousse and linger on the finish. Drink now through 2034. 1,667 cases made. (Wine Spectator)

This shows some savory soy and tobacco notes alongside biscuit, buttered toast and spiced pear. There’s a lemony freshness throughout. It’s creamy and medium-bodied with rounded, silky bubbles. Buttery and flavorful. Drink now. (James Suckling)
