Description

Château de Beaucastel's 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Southern Rhône blend built on Grenache and Mourvèdre, with supporting roles from Counoise, Syrah, Cinsaut, and other permitted varieties. The wine carries 14% alcohol and comes from organically grown grapes.

The nose opens with red fruit and black cherry, layered with garrigue, mint, white pepper, and hints of truffle and tree bark. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with velvety tannins that build gradually without heaviness. There's a minerality underneath (crushed stone), dark chocolate in the mid-palate, and a long finish marked by licorice and dark fruit. The wine shows polish and elegance even now, though it will benefit from a year or two of bottle age as the various elements knit together. This is a standout expression from a challenging vintage.

Honeycomb oak on the nose, then quite a broad and generous palate. Sappy acidity, although not as high as some white Châteauneufs this year, and a long finish. This has a good sense of lightness, drinkability and balance. The oak is quite forthright for now, so give this some time to come together. 80% Roussanne, 10% Grenache and Clairette, plus 10% of Piquepoul Blanc, Picardan and Bourboulenc. Part of the blend was matured in two- and three-year-old barriques for a year.

Still a little closed, so the fruit is a bit reserved, but there are already meaty, lavender and rosemary aromas. Well-structured and crisp, the tannins building steadily as it flows over the palate. The concentrated and ripe red fruit is very deftly wrapped around the core. Long, spicy, and licorice finish. Drink from release. From organically grown grapes.

Coming in at 14% alcohol, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Counoise, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut and other permitted varieties. The result is magnificent, wafting from the glass with fragrant aromas of juicy red fruits mingling with hints of black cherry, mint, garrigue and a pinch of white pepper. Full-bodied and layered, ever-so-velvety tannins wrap this elegant-to-the-core polished red, before concluding with a bright finish.
