On the eastern edge of Bordeaux's Right Bank, just beyond Saint-Émilion, sits Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux, a source of Merlot-based reds that trade on freshness and value. This 2018 comes from Chateau Joanin Becot, run by Juliette Bécot of the Bécot family, and follows the classic Right Bank template of plump Merlot given lift and definition by Cabernet Franc. It is a mid-weight red built for the table.
Expect a generous core of cassis and blueberry lifted by violet and floral notes, with a fine mineral edge running underneath.

Juliette Bécot (also of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot in Saint-Émilion) has done great work in this vintage! The 2019 Joanin Bécot reveals an abundance of cassis, blueberry, flower and violet aromas overlaid with a nuance of graphite. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is perfectly balanced and framed by fine, controlled tannins and power. This wine made a significant impression on me.
Evident freshness from the first moment, plenty of body to the savoury red fruits. Everything is in balance and you get both juice, deepening gourmet touches of chocolate shavings and salinity as it builds to the finish. Great stuff, and low SO2 additions.
The 2019 Joanin Bécot is terrific. Classy and polished, the 2019 shows off terrific purity of fruit and expressive aromatics to match its mid-weight personality. As always, the Franc lends notable distinction.
