Nebbiolo grown in Piedmont's Barolo zone gives you tannin and perfume in equal measure, and this 2021 bottling from Mario Cordero and his family leans toward the gracious end of that spectrum. It is a lighter, more perfumed reading of Barolo rather than a brooding one, medium in weight and built for charm as much as structure.
The color is a translucent ruby, and the nose opens on grenadine, pressed roses, sweet herbs, and a note of fresh earth. On the palate there is red cherry fruit, blood orange, and warm spice (cinnamon in particular), with good tension holding it together and tannins that build gently toward a finish carrying a faint gamey edge. Delicate and light on its feet, it drinks beautifully now while the fruit and freshness are at their peak.
Pouring a medium ruby red color, the 2021 Barolo Valentino is perfumed on the nose with ripe aromas of grenadine, pressed roses, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. Medium-bodied, it has good tension on the palate, with building tannins and a light gamey feel on the finish. I would prefer this over the near term while it keeps its fruit and freshness. The 2021 Barolo Valentino is another terrific wine from Mario Cordero and his children. Gracious and light on its feet, the 2021 graces the palate with hints of sweet red cherry fruit, cinnamon, blood orange and spice. This delicate, perfumed Barolo is all charm. (Vinous)
