Description

Domaine Courbis's Les Eygats is a Cornas Syrah from France's northern Rhône Valley, aged in 50% new oak. The 2019 vintage shows the dark, structured intensity Cornas is known for, with a deep violet appearance that signals serious concentration.

The nose opens with oak-spiced dark berry preserve, candied licorice, and smoked meat, layered underneath a bright mineral streak. On the palate, that minerality returns as a defining thread, running through vibrant blueberry and cherry liqueur flavors, with hints of fruitcake and mocha developing as the wine breathes. The finish is long and smoky, with a building mineral grip and increasingly assertive tannins. The wine is pulled between lifted peppery notes and concentrated jammy fruit right now, its edges still defined. Time in the bottle will help it settle and cohere, making this a candidate for cellaring.

Deep violet color. Displays expansive, oak-spiced dark berry preserve, candied licorice, smoked meat and potpourri aromas with a bright, mineral overtone. The mineral note repeats on the palate, which features vibrant blueberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and mocha flavors that slowly open up with aeration. Closes impressively long and smoky, with reverberating minerality and building tannins. 50% new oak.

Lifted and peppery on the nose, the 2019 Cornas les Eygats balances those elements with concentrated, jammy cherries, then balances those sweet, fruity notes with dense, chewy tannins. At the moment, it's all a bit too much and pulling in different directions, but I suspect it will come together with additional time in the bottle. Try it after 2025.
