A field blend at heart, this is Tempranillo (roughly 80 percent) grown alongside small amounts of the white grapes Viura, Malvasía, and Calagraño, all planted together in a single stony vineyard called Finca Montecillo in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja. The vines date to 1980, and Cuentaviñas co-ferments the destemmed grapes in concrete before sixteen months in 500-liter French oak, a portion of it new. The 2022 Alomado is a single-vineyard wine from San Vicente where white varieties such as Viura, Malvasia, and Calagrano grow at the top of the vineyard, all of which figure into the Tempranillo-dominant blend here in small amounts. It’s showing well in its youth, but clearly structured for aging, with a creamy texture and delicious tension. Gusto in style, it has big tannins, big acidity, and big oak, having spent 16 months in 500-liter French barrels, 30% new. The nose is pretty in violet and spring wildflowers as a full-bodied core of black cherry that glides along the palate with memorable finesse. Enjoy over the next 15-20 years. The 2022 Alomado was produced with a field blend of Tempranillo with some Viura and Calagraño from a vineyard called Finca Montecillo that was planted in 1980 on very stony soils. The destemmed grapes were co-fermented in concrete and matured in used 500-liter oak barrels for 16 months. It has notes of berries, herbs and some spices, vanilla and cinnamon, with a touch of smoke. It has controlled ripeness and comes in at 14% alcohol, and it has a medium to full-bodied palate, where the tannins are fine and the mouthfeel chalky and dry, with seriousness. 9,989 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. (Wine Advocate, February 2025)
The 2022 Cuentaviñas Alomado is 80% Tempranillo with Viura, Malvasía and Calagraño from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. This aged for 16 months in 500-liter barrels. Pale purple in hue, it opens with bright cherry aromas and nuanced floral and herbal notes. On the palate, this delivers precise intensity, fine texture and elevated freshness before a finish of mild fruit and a touch of chalk. It's expressive, if slightly more restrained than the 2021.
