A monopole is a single vineyard held entirely by one owner, and Clos Du Meix Garnier is exactly that for Domaine Belleville, a walled parcel in the Côte de Beaune village of Monthélie. This is Pinot Noir from the 2023 vintage, made in the classic red Burgundy mold: a village-level wine from a quieter corner of the region that has long stood in the shadow of neighboring Volnay and Meursault. Monthélie tends to give reds that are lighter on their feet than their more famous neighbors, which is much of their charm.

The 2023 Monthélie Clos du Meix Garnier is a monopole belonging to Domaine de Belleville. This has an attractive, finely delineated bouquet with red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, a light musk scent lingering in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, neatly integrated oak (25% new), and a touch of blackcurrant and bilberry toward the finish. Give this a year in bottle and you'll have a fine, sturdy Monthélie. (Vinous)
