Description

Domaine Chante Cigale's 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is a five-way blend of equal parts Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, and Clairette, fermented and aged primarily in stainless steel with small portions in larger wooden vessels and barrels. The white wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape balance structure and minerality in ways few other southern French whites attempt.

The wine opens with clean, pure aromatics, white peach and stone fruits layered with white flowers and mineral edges. On the palate it shows medium to full body and real energy, with crisp acidity and the characteristic bitter almond finish that marks the best whites from this region. The texture is ample and enveloping, built with enough density to carry through a full meal without heaviness. This is a wine ready to enjoy now but will develop pleasingly over the next 10 to 15 years.

Based on equal parts Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, and Clairette from galets roulés, limestone, and brown soils, the 2024 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc offers pure, clean aromatics of white peach and orchard fruits with white flower and mineral nuances. Aged six months primarily in stainless steel with small portions in foudre and barrels, it's medium-bodied, very pure, clean, and balanced, with that classic Rhône white bitter almond nuance on the finish. It will shine on the dinner table over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2025-2039. Run by Alexandre Favier, who took over winemaking in 2002, this estate farms 40 hectares across 45 parcels throughout the appellation. I wrote in 2019 that this estate was working their way up the hierarchy, and I think it's safe to say with the 2023s that they're unquestionably producing brilliant wines that can stand up to anything in the vintage. The range includes the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape (65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault aged mostly in concrete), Pi (100% Grenache from sandy soils in the Pignan lieu-dit), and La Serine (100% Syrah from the old Northern Rhône Serine clone). They also make two whites - their classic cuvée, based on a broad mix of varieties, and an Extrait Blanc based on equal parts Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. (Jeb Dunnuck, November 2025)

The 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc starts with intense lemon flesh, grapefruit, white flowers and a trace of wet stone. Medium- to full-bodied, crisp and energetic, the 2024 is a lively white Châteauneuf packing excellent vitality and drawing to a close with finesse on the clean finish.
