Description

Pommard tends to make the sturdiest reds of the Côte de Beaune, and this bottling comes from a single walled vineyard held entirely by one estate, a 3.63-hectare monopole worked parcel by parcel. Domaine de la Commaraine, under owners Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, has installed Paul Krug as régisseur, who is reworking the plantings by budding over lesser clones with massal selection drawn from vines that date to 1957. This is the 2023, a Premier Cru Pinot Noir from Burgundy that reflects both the site's structure and that ongoing vineyard renewal.

The aromas run deep, plum and blackberry edged with earth, leather, and a faint floral lift, alongside a cleaner register of dark berry, undergrowth, and pencil shavings. The palate opens smoothly for something built on such firm, dense tannin, with dark chocolate and mocha threading through the black fruit and a touch of oak still settling in. Black pepper sharpens the finish. There is real depth here, and a couple of years in the cellar will let it knit together.

Decanter

The 2023 Clos de la Commaraine aromas are deep and rich, with notes of plum and blackberry, hints of earth and leather and a light floral note at the end. The texture is firm, tannic and dense, but not unyielding. The grapes are from a 3.63ha monopole clos. Farming and vinification are done parcel by parcel; the new owners, Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, have hired Paul Krug as régisseur, who has undertaken the work of budding over inferior clonal selections with massal selection from vines planted in 1957. Vinous

The 2023 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru has a clean, precise bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and light pencil box scents. This is detailed and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth opening, as hints of dark chocolate and mocha infuse the black fruit. There is a little oak to be assimilated, but the 2023 displays fine depth as a dash of black pepper enhances the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. (Vinous, January 2025)
