Description

A monopole in Pommard means one owner controls every row, and the Clos de la Commaraine gives Domaine de la Commaraine sole claim to a 3.63-hectare walled parcel in this Côte de Beaune commune known for its structured, dark-fruited Pinot Noir. This is the 2023, a Premier Cru farmed and vinified parcel by parcel. Under new owners Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, régisseur Paul Krug has been budding over weaker clonal material with massal selection drawn from vines planted in 1957, patient work aimed at raising the quality of the fruit itself.

The aromatics run deep and rich, plum and blackberry threaded with earth, leather and a light floral note, along with undergrowth and a whiff of pencil box that lends precision. The palate opens smoothly for a wine of this build, then reveals its Pommard frame: firm, dense, tannic without turning severe. Dark chocolate and mocha infuse the black fruit, a little oak still folding in, and a dash of black pepper sharpens the finish. Give it two or three years to knit together.

The 2023 Clos de la Commaraine aromas are deep and rich, with notes of plum and blackberry, hints of earth and leather and a light floral note at the end. The texture is firm, tannic and dense, but not unyielding. The grapes are from a 3.63ha monopole clos. Farming and vinification are done parcel by parcel; the new owners, Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, have hired Paul Krug as régisseur, who has undertaken the work of budding over inferior clonal selections with massal selection from vines planted in 1957. Vinous

The 2023 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru has a clean, precise bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and light pencil box scents. This is detailed and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth opening, as hints of dark chocolate and mocha infuse the black fruit. There is a little oak to be assimilated, but the 2023 displays fine depth as a dash of black pepper enhances the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. (Vinous, January 2025)
