Description

A Grenache-led expression of Chateauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Duseigneur, this Matteo cuvée pours from the 2023 vintage in the southern Rhone. The blend runs 80% Grenache Noir to 20% Syrah, both from certified organic fruit, and the wine is raised across large barrels, older barrels and concrete, an élevage designed to shape without smothering. The result is a medium- to full-bodied red that carries clear oak influence but keeps it in check.

Vanilla, baking spice and dark berries lead the way, threaded with the wild-herb garrigue note that runs through so much of the region's red. It's dense and structured on the palate, framed by velvety tannins that stretch into a long, spicy, penetrating finish. What stands out is how gracefully it wears its wood: no drying edges, no excess toast, just freshness and fruit carrying through to the close. A well-crafted, charming take on the cuvée.

Wine Advocate

Despite its overtly oaky, toasty profile, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Matteo remains well-balanced and harmonious. It opens with aromas of vanilla, baking spices, dark berries and garrigue. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it is framed by velvety tannins that carry through to a long, spicy and penetrating finish. A blend of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah, matured in a combination of large barrels, used barrels and concrete tanks, this cuvée wears its wood influence with surprising grace, avoiding the excess dryness or toastiness that can sometimes accompany such élevage. Vinous

Moderately intense red and black fruits alongside spicy subtleties present the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Matteo. Vinified from certified organic Grenache and Syrah, the 2023 must take a backseat to the more fascinating 2022 I tasted last year. Nonetheless, it’s a well-crafted, charming rendition of the cuvée that checks out with freshness on the long, fruit-toned finish. (Vinous, October 2025)
