Romanée-Saint-Vivant is one of the grand cru climats of Vosne-Romanée, and this 2023 comes from Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron. It is Pinot Noir, the grape that defines red Burgundy, drawn from a site whose reputation rests on perfume and finesse rather than sheer weight. The wine was recently moved back into barrel, and it carries itself accordingly: a young grand cru with the frame to reward patience.
The bouquet is layered, mixing red and black fruit with a lift of iris and a whisper of dark chocolate. On the palate it stays medium-bodied, its tannins fine and pliant, framing dark berry fruit touched with a gentle toast from the barrel. The overall lean is toward black fruit rather than red, and a streak of graphite firms up the finish. Give it several years in the cellar to unwind and gather itself.

The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru had recently been racked back into barrels rather than vat. It has a perfumed bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, iris flower and hints of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant, fine tannins that frame the slightly toasty dark berry fruit. As usual, this leans more toward black than red fruit, with a touch of graphite toward the finish. This will need four or five years in bottle. (Vinous)
