Dominio de Pingus's PSI is a Tempranillo-based red from the Sorian side of Ribera del Duero, in Spain's Castilla y León region. The 2022 vintage draws from nearly 700 old vineyard parcels, with a small portion of Garnacha in the blend. Only 20 percent of the wine saw barrel aging; the rest matured in large oak vats, allowing the fruit to shine with minimal oak influence.
This is clean and expressive wine, marked by perfumed, floral character and aromatic elegance. You'll find ripe plum and cherry alongside herbal and balsamic notes, with a whisper of orange peel and soft cedar. The palate is juicy and creamy, built on fine-grained tannins that feel refined rather than heavy. Medium-bodied with good freshness and lively acidity, it drinks with contained ripeness and no alcoholic heat (around 13.8% abv). The precision improves vintage to vintage; this ranks among the finest PSI releases.
The bottled 2022 PSI follows the character of the sample I tasted last year: it's clean, expressive and open. It's perfumed, elegant, floral and quite attractive and does not transmit any heat. In fact, it has contained ripeness and around 13.8% alcohol. They have improved the selection tremendously, and the wine has gained in precision; it's better each year. There is something that reminds me of the old vintages of Pesquera (1994 and before), with notes of orange peel and aromatic herbs. It's medium-bodied, has fine tannins and very good freshness. Only 20% of the volume matured in barrel and the rest in large oak vats (2,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-liter ones), and the élevage is quite respectful of the wine. This should be readily available, as they produced 360,000 bottles in 2022. It's detailed and hand-crafted, real wine in good volume, coming from 700 plots of old vines, all in all around 8% Garnacha. Despite the conditions of the year, this has to be one of the finest vintages of PSI.
The 2022 PSI hails from the Sorian side of Ribera del Duero. Ripe plum, cherry and herbal aromas mingle with a balsamic touch, soft cedar and a hint of prune. The palate is juicy and creamy in texture, defined by firm, fine-grained tannins and moderate structure. Concentration comes from the old vines, while lively acidity balances the fine tannins. A solid example of Ribera Soriana.
