Description

Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese in its most serious register, grown on the hills around the Tuscan town and held back for years before release. This 2021 comes from Donatella Cinelli Colombini, farmed organically, and it leans richer and more concentrated than a good deal of what Montalcino turns out these days, without tipping into excess. Bottled under the DOCG, it reads as a fuller, more generous expression of the grape while staying honest to what Sangiovese is.

The color is a medium garnet, and the nose opens ripe and inviting: stewed red fruit and black cherry, blueberry and a lick of crème de cassis, then rose petals, crushed violets, polished leather, and a dusting of cedar and sage. On the palate it carries its ripeness with control, medium to full in body but lifted by a refreshing spine of acidity and a web of fine, refined tannins. Crisp red berry fruit runs through a long, delicate finish touched with licorice and a crunchy mineral edge. It gives immediate pleasure now and has the balance to hold and evolve over the next decade.

Pouring a medium garnet color, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is generous and ripe on opening, with aromas of stewed red fruit along with blueberries, polished leather, crushed violets, and balance. It continues to the palate with good freshness in a medium to full-bodied frame, with a refreshing spine of acidity, refined tannins, and good length. It offers immediate pleasure and should also have no problem drinking well for another 10 or more years. Drink 2026-2040. (Jeb Dunnuck, February 2026)

Wearing its ripeness with confidence, the organic Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2021 Brunello di Montalcino delivers dark fruit, black cherry and hints of crème de cassis in a style that leans richer and more concentrated than much of today’s Montalcino landscape. While the wine initially reads as modern or contemporary, it ultimately resolves with an elegant, streamlined momentum that remains faithful to Sangiovese character. The palate balances power with control, avoiding excess despite its generous profile. Fruit is sourced from roughly 10 hectares of vineyards, with total production reaching 38,800 bottles. The remarkably pretty 2021 Brunello di Montalcino has an inviting bouquet of red plums, rose petals, cedary spice and dusty sage. It is lifted and refined, with crisp red berry fruits and violet inner florals underscored by crunchy mineral tones. A web of fine tannins flexes upon the palate as the 2021 finishes long yet delicate with a subtle licorice tinge. (Vinous, November 2025)
