Description

Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese in its most serious guise, grown on the hills around the Tuscan town of Montalcino and given long aging before release, and the Riserva bottling asks for even more patience than the standard cuvée. This 2020 from Donatella Cinelli Colombini is drawn from ten hectares of vineyards, with production held to around 5,200 bottles. It sits at the fuller, more oak-shaped end of the estate's range.

Expect dark fruit with real depth here, plum and cherry edging toward sauce, threaded with spice, cured tobacco, and a lift of wilted violet and lavender. There is a cool-toned, stony quality that keeps the richness in check, and the tannins run firm and slightly chalky, giving the finish a chewy grip that still reads as young. Generous and plush in personality rather than austere, though a few years in the cellar will let the structure soften and the perfume open.

Wine Advocate

Bold and richly extracted, the Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva stands as the most oak-driven wine in the estate’s current lineup, delivering voluptuous dark fruit with supporting notes of spice and cured tobacco. Sweet tannins and a plush texture give the wine an accessible, charming personality, favoring generosity over austerity. Fruit is drawn from 10 hectares of vineyards, with total production limited to 5,200 bottles. (Wine Advocate, January 2026)

Reductive style with floral aromas, red and black cherries and plummy depth. Full body, firm and chalky tannins and crisp acidity. Slightly austere finish at the moment. Try after 2028. (James Suckling)

Vinous

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva emerges from the glass with a blend of plum and cherry sauce, giving way to wilted violets and wet stone. It is graceful and cool-toned, with perfumed wild berry fruits and a sweet herbal thrust toward the close. The finish is dry and gently tannic, with a chewy sensation and a lingering air of sweet lavender. (Vinous, November 2025)
