Description

Orcia is one of Tuscany's quieter appellations, sitting between the more famous hills of Montalcino and Montepulciano, and this bottling from Donatella Cinelli Colombini leans into what the zone does well: Sangiovese with a wilder, cooler edge. The 2019 Cenerentola is a certified organic blend, 65 percent Sangiovese rounded out with 35 percent Foglia Tonda, an old Tuscan grape you rarely see named. The fruit comes from limestone soils at around 400 meters, high enough to keep a breeze moving through the vines, and the wine carries a full 15 percent alcohol.

It opens slowly and rewards patience, unfolding a smoky mix of crushed stone, dried flowers, and blackcurrant, with an exotic spice note underneath. The texture is silken and round yet distinctly cool-toned, ripe red and blue fruits given a tactile, almost crunchy mineral grip and lifted by violet florals. Tart cassis and forest berry run through the middle, edged with raspberry bramble and something earthy and autumnal. It finishes long, classically dry, and firmly structured, echoes of black licorice and sage trailing off under a fine dusting of chalk. A wild, fresh wine now, with more to give as its oak knits together over time.

Vinous

The 2019 Orcia Cenerentola is intense: it gradually wafts up with a smoky mix of crushed rocks, dried flowers and blackcurrants, complicated by an exotic spiciness that I find wildly appealing. This is silken and round, yet quite cool-toned in feel. Depths of ripe red and blue fruits take on a tactile feel as crunchy minerals saturate under an air of violet inner florals. This finishes long, classically dry and structured, leaving echoes of black licorice and sage with a top note of chalk dust. Easily the best young vintage of Cenerentola that I’ve ever tasted, the 2019 is a blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Foglia Tonda. A bit of oak integration through cellaring will take this to the next level. (Vinous)

Wine Advocate

The certified organic Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2019 Orcia Cenerentola is made with 65% Sangiovese and 35% Foglia Tonda planted in limestone soils at a breezy 400 meters in elevation. The wine shows medium-rich concentration with tart flavors of cassis and forest berry. Those forest-like aromas continue with raspberry bramble, autumnal leaf and peat moss. I like the freshness of this wine and its wild side. The alcohol is high at 15%. Production is 12,800 bottles. (Wine Advocate, March 2024)
