Description

Sangiovese grown in Montalcino, in southern Tuscany, is bottled as Brunello and held back for years before release, which gives it the structure and depth this appellation is known for. This is Donatella Cinelli Colombini's Prime Donne bottling from the 2020 vintage, made from organic fruit, and 2020 marks the first vintage in which the site has earned recognition as an official "vigna," or single vineyard, within the appellation.

Dark in the glass and a touch reticent at first, it needs a moment to open before it unfolds notes of cherry liqueur, toasted cedar, chili flake, and something sweeter, like butterscotch. There's a savory, smoky side too, with hints of fireplace soot, dark coffee, and grilled herbs, and a mentholated lift over crushed-stone minerality. The body is full but never heavy, carried by fresh acidity and ripe, well-defined tannins that feel fine-grained rather than gripping. The finish is long and gently spicy, threaded with licorice and a sour-citrus edge. Polished and well balanced, it drinks nicely now with air but has the frame to reward patience.

Dark magenta/red in color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Prime Donne takes a minute to open in the glass and reveals expressive notes of chili flake, toasted cedar, cherry liqueur, and butterscotch. Full-bodied, it has good freshness and purity, with ripe, well-defined tannins, an even feel throughout, and a rather long finish. Quite an impressive wine, it will start to show its best with at least another 6-12 months in bottle. Drink 2026-2040. This is a very nicely polished style of red. (Jeb Dunnuck, January 2025)

Wine Advocate

The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne (with 8,700 bottles coming to the market at the new year) has a slightly darker character with more savory tones compared to the already toasty classic Brunello from the same vintage. Made with organic fruit, the wine shows hints of fireplace soot, Viennese coffee and grilled herb over a full-bodied texture. The tannins are well managed and so is the acidity. This is the first vintage in which "Prime Donne" has earned recognition as an official "vigna," or vineyard, in the appellation. (Wine Advocate, November 2024)

Vinous

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Progetto Prime Donne opens with a burst of mentholated herbs, crushed rocks offsetting black cherries, and hints of balsamic spice. It sweeps across the palate with silken textures and mineral-infused wild berries, all guided by a core of zesty acidity. It is quite spicy through the finish and features a web of fine-grained tannins, licorice and sour citrus nuances. There's a lovely balance here that makes the 2020 appealing. However, it's in the cellar where this will really shine. (Vinous)
