The Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon's Willamette Valley has earned attention for Pinot Noir, but Chardonnay has been quietly making its own case here, and the Seven Springs bottling has been one of the wines steering that conversation. Grown on an estate site (this cuvée draws from a south-facing portion of the vineyard), it comes from the team now led by Sashi Moorman and John Faulkner. The 2022 is a cool-climate, mineral-driven white in a style that prizes tension over weight.
Expect aromas of crushed chalk, dried chamomile and a saline, sea-spray edge, with flint and toast that blow off in the glass to reveal dried apple, beeswax and a spicy lift. There is a faint phenolic grip to the palate, ripe nectarine and smoky grilled lemon peel set against wet-stone minerality and a savory, honey-nut finish. The frame is medium-bodied with real cut, silky and pure, carried by an electric energy that floats through to the close. Approachable now, it should flesh out and gain breadth with a few years in bottle.

The Seven Springs Chardonnay from Evening Land is one of the wines that has tipped the Eola-Amity Hills appellation towards Chardonnay. This wine comes from a unique section of the estate site in their south block. Aromas of crushed chalk, dried chamomile and saline seaspray minerality frame this wine. The palate is a hint phenolic, with rich ripe nectarine flesh, smoky grilled lemon peel and a savoury edge that comes from a finish of smoky citrus. (Decanter, July 2024)
A brilliant silver/yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Seven Springs is light on its feet, with notes of lemon verbena, pith, wet stones, and powdery flowers. The palate has a medium-bodied frame with good cut, but also a rounded and very pretty, silky, pure, fruity feel. It’s only going to flesh out with a bit of time, but the energy and tension float through the wine. It has electric energy, though it’s approachable, and as it opens, it takes on more lime citrus notes. It offer a lot of pleasure upfront to enjoy now or over the coming 10 years.
