From Maremma in coastal Tuscany, this is the 2022 Poggio Valente, a single-vineyard red from Fattoria le Pupille bottled under the broad Toscana IGT designation. The estate has moved toward aging in larger oak casks (botte) rather than smaller barrels, a shift that lets the fruit and the Mediterranean character of the site speak more plainly. The result is a wine with a distinct voice, punchy and clear rather than polished into anonymity.
Expect blue flowers, heritage rose, and tart cherry over a savory base of rye bread and crushed stone, with the scrubland herbs of the coast (rosemary, lavender) threading through. There is real density and power here too, macerated dark cherry and plum layered with spice, leather, licorice, and a touch of sweet oak. In its youth the elements are still finding each other, so give it air or a year or two in the cellar; both bring the pieces into focus and let the wine's more classic Tuscan side emerge.

Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice. The 2022 Poggio Valente is dense and quite powerful in the glass. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and a kick of sweet oak are all amplified. I would cellar this for at least a year or two. There's plenty of depth here. Perhaps that will help all the elements to meld together a bit more fully. Time in the glass helps a lot, as Sangiovese notes become more pronounced as the wine opens. For now, Poggio Valente shows a lot of vintage 2022 ripeness, but I am cautiously optimistic about its prospects, given how well it develops with aeration. (Vinous)
