Brunello di Montalcino draws all its color and structure from a single grape, Sangiovese, grown high in the hills of southern Tuscany. This 2019 from Poggio di Sotto comes from organically farmed fruit on the galestro-rich schist that gives the wine much of its lift and complexity. It is a still red built for the cellar, with the concentration of a warm, generous vintage carried by the finesse Montalcino is known for.
The aromatics arrive refined and bright, violets and red fruit threaded with orange peel, crushed stone, and a graphite, pencil-shaving note. On the palate it is medium to full, deep and silky, with ripe tannins that have a dusty grip but caress more than they clamp. There is real length here, a long, salivating finish that signals power held in reserve. Approachable with air, but everything points toward a long evolution, so reward it with patience.

This excellent wine is slated to be released in January 2025. The Poggio di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows a point of brilliant fruit over a medium-plus texture. The wine exhibits dusty tannins from the galestro-rich schistic soils that have a huge impact on the elegance and complexity of this exceptional and cellar-worthy Sangiovese. The palate salivates when you taste this wine. The bouquet is refined and bright with floral tones, red fruit and pencil shaving. Everything is in perfect form and balance. The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a jeweled ruby color and has more concentration than the 2018, but it's going to need time to reach its full potential of complexity. Rich notes of kirsch, licorice, sapid herbs, and dark stones are followed by a medium to full-bodied red that's deep and rich through the palate, with ripe and noble tannins, a seamless feel, and a long-lasting finish. Focused and perfumed, showing violet, dark-cherry, orange-peel and crushed-stone character. Medium-bodied, this has firm and refined tannins that caress the palate. It’s silky and very long, showing precision and finesse with structure. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2026 but will age for a very long time with confidence.
