Description

Feudo Maccari's Saia is a Nero d'Avola from Noto, in southeastern Sicily, made from organically farmed vines and aged in a blend of larger tonneaux and smaller barrique for structure and complexity. The 2020 vintage shows the varietal's dark fruit character with a freshness that speaks to careful vineyard work and measured extraction during fermentation.

The wine opens with aromas of black licorice, crushed plum, and ground spice, followed by a medium-to-full-bodied palate where red and black fruit sit alongside steady acidity and mineral notes. The tannins are powdery yet firm rather than aggressive, and there's a pleasant earthiness, dark cherry, sweet herbs, and hints of smoke, that makes this feel less about extraction and more about balance. The barriques contribute coffee and spice notes without overwhelming the fruit or the wine's essential freshness. This is a wine built for the table, with enough structure to age a few years but already showing the kind of articulation and flexibility that makes it food-friendly now.

Aromas of black licorice, crushed plum and ground spice. Medium-to full-bodied with powdery yet firm tannins. Fresher and crunchier than past vintages. The red and black fruit on the palate is nicely articulated by steady acidity and some mineral notes. Best after 2025.

The certified organic 2020 Sicilia Saia is all Nero d'Avola from one of the prettiest parts of rural Sicily in Noto. This red wine shows medium concentration with dark fruit, ripe cherry, black olive and sweet earthy tones. It is richly textured and ends with soft, sweet tannins. This is a great food wine with an ample 60,000 bottles on the market. It sees 20 days of skin contact during fermentation and is aged in a combination of tonneaux and second or third-year barrique.

Saia is a selection of Nero d'Avola in Noto from around 40-year-old alberello-trained vines planted in a mix of white calcareous and black sandy soils. It's vinified in stainless steel then matured in barriques for 14 months. The result is a wine with deep, earthy cherry and herb scents, and a rich, vertical palate of sweet black and red fruits and potpourri fragrance allied to good acidity and fine, sandy tannins. The barriques peek through with their coffee, liquorice and spice, but this is ultimately a fresh, gastronomic Nero d'Avola, well sculpted and flexible with food.
