Description

Gaja's 2010 Barbaresco is a Nebbiolo from Piedmont's Barbaresco zone, sourced from 14 vineyards across the region. This is a wine of considerable power and depth, built on the foundation that has made this producer's name synonymous with the appellation.

The 2010 announces itself with pronounced richness and intensity, yet balances that opulence against a striking smoothness and mineral finesse. You'll find dried berry fruit, Spanish cedar, crushed herb, anisette, and blue flower in the glass, layered over a foundation of velvety tannins. The wine shows an impressive integration of oak and concentration, all held together by chiseled mineral notes and a delicate floral lift. Though it drinks with grace now, this Barbaresco will reward patience and improves over the next several years.

Wine Advocate

Smack from the start, the 2010 Barbaresco shows full-on Gajissimo personality with irresistible opulence and intensity, magically contrasted against remarkable smoothness and finesse. Everyone wants to know his secret. The wine delivers seductively rich concentration and integrated oak that is offset by a delicate portfolio of chiseled mineral, dried berry fruit, Spanish cedar, crushed herb, anisette and blue flower. Fruit is sourced from 14 vineyards in Barbaresco. It already leaves a mark, but will reward those who wait. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. Just a short while ago, in the midst of one of Italy’s darkest political hours when forming a functioning government seemed like an exercise in futility, someone sent me a Facebook petition proposing Angelo Gaja as a candidate for President of the Republic of Italy. Although Angelo himself would brush it off as jest, that seedling of a (good) idea took the Internet by firestorm. What he has demonstrated over the years, besides from his infectious enthusiasm and keen ability to communicate his thoughts with brilliant clarity and gumption, is a natural ability for leadership. Barbaresco is lucky to have an Angelo Gaja, the Langhe is lucky to have him, and Italy is, too. Importer: Terlato Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-8900

Vinous

Freshly cut flowers, raspberries, mint, anise and licorice all waft from the glass in Gaja's 2010 Barbaresco. Mid-weight, gracious and utterly impeccable, the 2010 stands out for its balance and harmony. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift and brilliance. All the elements fall into place in this supple, beautifully balanced Barbaresco that represents the essence of the vintage. I am surprised how open and accessible the 2010 is for a young Gaja Barbaresco. Although the 2010 will be better in a few years, it already drinks well with a little air.
