Description

Greywacke's 2024 Sauvignon Blanc comes from Marlborough, New Zealand's most celebrated region for the varietal. Known for bright acidity and herbaceous character, this wine captures the house style: fruit-forward and mineral-edged, sealed under screw cap at 13.5% alcohol.

The nose opens with passion fruit and white pineapple alongside green apple, beeswax, and a saline edge. On the palate, it's rich and mouth-filling, layered with tropical fruit, pink grapefruit, and elderflower, with green pepper and jalapeño flickers cutting through the ripeness. Creamy lees undertones add texture, but what carries the wine is its acidity, crunchy and bracing, which tightens to a long, crisp, dry finish with a mineral grip. The wine speaks directly of its place, balancing generosity with restraint. It's ready to drink now, though the fruit intensity and structural balance suggest it will age gracefully.

Aromatic and evocative, bursting with pink grapefruit, tropical fruits, elderflower, lemongrass and snow pea, with a creamy lees undertow and flashes of herbal/mineral notes. A rich, mouth-filling palate, generous in tropical fruit and citrussy acid drive, which tightens up to a nicely crisply saline, long dry finish. Lovely now but fruit intensity and balance suggest this will mellow nicely in the bottle too. Richelle Tyney joined Greywacke in 2021, bringing steady-handed finesse to an already very smart collection of wines.

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
