Description

Grounded Wine Co.'s 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is a California red made by Josh Phelps. It's a medium-bodied wine built on ripe, accessible fruit and built to drink now, though it will age gracefully over the next several years.

Mixed berry and cherry compote dominate the aromatics, joined by candied violets and warm baking spices. The palate echoes those notes while staying fruit-forward and easy to drink. Crisp tannins with velvety edges frame the wine, and the finish stretches with cool graphite minerality, touches of graham cracker and vanilla, and subtle cocoa nib notes. There's real balance here: the wine is ripe and approachable without feeling heavy, with soft tannins that have no hard edges. This is pure pleasure in a glass.

A wine of pure pleasure from winemaker Josh Phelps. A mixed berry fruit and cherry compote rises from the glass, accompanied by hints of candied violets and warm brown baking spices. Medium-bodied, the palate mirrors the aromatics, framed by crisp tannins with velvety edges. The finish lingers with cool graphite minerality, a touch of graham cracker and vanilla, and subtle nuances of crushed cocoa nibs. As I said, pure pleasure.

Approachable and ripe with aromas of blackberries, plums, vanilla and baking spices. The palate is full-bodied with soft tannins and an easy, fruit-forward finish. Drink now.

Lots of cassis, sweet spice, flowers, and cedar notes all shine in Phelp's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, a medium-bodied, pure, fruit-forward, sexy California Cabernet Sauvignon that has soft tannins and terrific overall balance. It's impeccably made, has sweet tannins, and no hard edges. It's undeniably delicious and perfect for drinking over the coming 4-6 years, if not longer. Drink 2025-2031. (Jeb Dunnuck, June 2025)
