Gunderloch's 2021 Riesling Auslese from the Rothenberg vineyard in Nackenheim (Rheinhessen) is a lightly sweet German white made from overripe, botrytis-affected grapes. At 7% alcohol, it's delicate and food-friendly, sealed under screw cap.
The wine opens with a crystalline, spicy bouquet that layers raisin, candied grapefruit, and fully ripe mirabelle plum. On the palate it's round and lush, concentrated yet refined, with a saline minerality that runs through the middle and into a structured finish touched by delicate bitter notes. The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese is based on pink- and violet-colored overripe but healthy grapes. The nose is brilliantly clear and spicy, with fine raisin aromas intertwined with candied grapefruit and fully ripe mirabelles. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this is a very refined and concentrated, saline and savory Auslese with delicate bitters on the well-structured finish that is a gorgeous reflection of the Rothenberg terroir. Beautifully clear and saline. 7% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine from the 375-milliliter bottle in August 2022.
