Description

Cooler than its Napa neighbors to the north, the Oak Knoll District tends to give Chardonnay a leaner, more precise frame, and that is the register Heitz Cellar works in here. The 2021 Quartz Creek is the only Chardonnay the producer currently makes, drawn from a single vineyard in the district. The 2021 growing season was long and cool, with drought holding yields down, and that combination tends to concentrate flavor in a young white.

The nose opens with a rush of floral notes and something cool, almost mentholated, alongside a concentrated streak of lime. On the palate it plays two things against each other: a silky, creamy texture on one hand and a linear, tightly wound feel on the other, finishing long and taut. The word that keeps coming to mind is harmony, a wine that holds its intensity and its finesse in balance.

The 2021 Chardonnay Quartz Creek Vineyard is fabulous and also a step up from the 2020 tasted alongside it. Effusive floral top notes open first. Silky and creamy on the palate, with gorgeous finesse, the 2021 is, first and foremost, a wine of harmony. Low yields created by drought and a cool, long growing season yielded an especially intense young Chardonnay. (AG)

Cool and almost mentholated on the nose, with concentrated lime essence, the 2021 Chardonnay Quartz Creek Vineyard is the only Chardonnay currently made by Heitz, using fruit from this Burgess-owned vineyard in Oak Knoll. It's medium-bodied, linear in feel and quite tight, with a long, taut finish.
